Hi! For those of you who don't know us, we are FOLD: a Leeds-based music collective dedicated to amplifying humanitarian perspectives. Our work is a long-standing experiment with the human voice in music. We’ve spent many years incorporating historical speakers, poets, authors, singers, emcees etc, both living and deceased, into our music in myriad ways and we find that there is an inexplicable magic that can emerge from that process and that really is the essence of the FOLD sound. Stylistically you’ll hear influences of jazz-funk, hip-hop, psychedelia, Brazilian Popular Music and even ‘rocky, smashy bits.’
Our ethos is all about community, love, growth and keeping spaces open where people can speak freely. We love to get input and feedback from you—our audience and our own circles of friends & family—to better inform our work. We’re staunch advocates of openness; we let it all hang out in our music both in the studio and on the stage.
As musicians, we have a platform—albeit a modest one—and within that space, given the amount of injustice & exploitation that happens all around us every day, we believe it is incredibly important for us to reflect the perspectives that are going to move us forward as a species, that will enable us to challenge all forms of domination from a place of love, and thereby grow.
This is a bit of tough sell within the music industry and we find there really aren’t enough artists using their platform in the same way. Now as you’ll all be feeling, times have gotten harder; we’re at the threshold of another energy crisis—I won’t get into that—and a cost of living crisis. For us as musicians, we’re at the bottom of the pile in terms of political priorities and it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep going.
