Insurgent Mood (Single)

[Lorraine Hansberry] I’m very pleased that those peoples in the world whom I feel closest to – the colonial peoples, the African peoples, the Asian peoples – are in an insurgent mood; and are in the process of transforming the world and I think for the better. I can’t quite understand pessimism at this moment; unless of course one is wedded to things that are dying out – which should die out – like colonialism, like racism and so forth. For me this is one of the most affirmative periods in history. [Interviewer] Would you care to go on about that? [Lorraine Hansberry] Yes… I think its absolutely necessary that people who are just coming into their own in the world must be as dramatic about it as they possibly can; must embrace all causes, must embrace all methods. We’re talking about oppressed peoples who are that saying that they must assert themselves in the world. We have a great deal to be angry about. Its hard to know what you should fight for or against but there are things to do. We must make some decisions in this country.

about

Through the medium of hip hop this album opener delivers a revolutionary statement from Lorraine Hansberry made in 1959. She was living through a moment much like the present day in which new possibilities for extraordinary change presented themselves.

Our intention is to highlight the fact that what we’re seeing now is the result of a continuum of struggle that has lasted hundreds of years. Making structural changes will require a sustained effort from all of us.

It also adds a crucial layer to Lorraine Hansberry’s achievements within the context of Aphelion; not only as a writer but as an intellectual, visionary and activist.

As a further homage to the long struggle, the cover is a painting of Toussaint L'Ouverture: one the greatest revolutionaries of all time.

The main focus of our work has always been to amplify the voices and perspectives of oppressed and marginalised peoples. We will continue to do so.
